In the aftermath of a successful symposium in Fort Worth, the Association of Historians of American Art (AHAA) invites proposals for sponsorship of our fall 2018 symposium. AHAA is especially keen on sites where there is a noteworthy event, collection, or installation in the host city that would be of interest to Americanists. Previous venues have included Brooklyn (2010), Boston (2012), and Philadelphia (2014).

All members in good standing are eligible to propose an AHAA-sponsored Symposium. Each proposal must be authored and sponsored by at least two members of AHAA with the intention that the project will be co-chaired by them. In the spirit of AHAA, it is recommended that the co-chairs represent both those from colleges or universities and from the museum world.

The proposal should consist of three parts: a Letter of Intent, at least two Letters of Institutional Support, and the CVs of the proposers. In the Letter of Intent, the co-chairs should outline why the AHAA Symposium should be held at a particular site, as well as the types of collaborations among institutions that the location can offer. It is recommended that at least one co-chair be affiliated with a hosting institution. The Letters of Institutional Support will affirm the backing of the hosting institutions. For additional information on the proposal and symposium planning process, please visit the Symposium Protocol and Planning Guidelines

Official proposals are due December 5, 2016 to Questions may be directed to this email address or to

AHAA wishes to thank the Symposium Planning Committee of our 2016 Symposium: Sarah Kelly Oehler, Maggie Adler, Shirley Reece-Hughes, Mark Thistlethwaite, Lori Diel, and Sue Canterbury, as well as the hosting institutions: Texas Christian University, The Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, and the Amon Carter Museum of American Art.
